Mason joined the Avondale Police Department (APD) in 1975 becoming an investigator in the Detective Division in 1978 and was promoted to Sergeant in 1983.
In 2002 he was awarded the Medal of Valor, the highest law enforcement medal awarded to officers by the Avondale Police Department. The Medal of Valor is an award for bravery given to officers for individual acts of extraordinary bravery or heroism performed in the line of duty at extreme and life-threatening personal risk. After ending his shift in the early morning hours of January 2001, he stopped off at a convenience store to fill his tank.
Upon entering the building, two masked gunmen turned and fired at the officer, both missing with their bullets. Mason returned fire, killing one of the shooters before another grabbed a hostage and ducked behind a center aisle. After a brief standoff, Mason successfully rescued the frightened woman and apprehended the last gunman interrupting the robbery and saving the lives of the four individuals in the store.
As a respected member of the community and a Browning Academy alumni, Mason maintains a relationship with the college and its graduates often providing tours and ride-alongs for students interested in Law Enforcement. In his free time he coaches a little league baseball team that gives children of broken homes a positive place to go after school. A divorced father of three, Mason understands the importance of a good role model and works to provide for his family and ensure they become respectable members of society.
