50: Strange Bedfellows – Pt. 2

*Author's note: Please excuse the lighting in some sections. I experienced a crash or two and forgot to dim them/color them flame.*

A steady stream of light, yellow in color with an orange hue beamed down onto Victoria’s face as she awakened. Still clad in her underwear, she lay sprawled out on her extra soft silk comforter doing her best to convince her body to move. She sat up on the edge of the bed and stretched, wincing from the pain in her neck. Every muscle in her body felt sore but it was the good kind. Glancing over her shoulder she found herself staring into the charming smile and reason behind the ache in her lower back and thighs. “What?” she asked of the cocky expression on Derrick’s face.

49: Strange Bedfellows – Pt. 1

“Nana, please answer your phone! This is close to my 10th message and I’ve still not heard back from you.” Victoria sighed and switched ears, successfully managing to multitask while prepping breakfast for her and Derrick. She flipped the skillet, tossing the pancake up and catching it before lowering the heat on the burner. “It’s really important I talk to you. I need to know what to do next. Call me back, please.”

“Still haven’t heard from Loretta?” Derrick’s voice took her by momentary surprise.

48: To Hell and Back- Pt. 3

*Warning: Amazingly horrific photoshop!*

“You think maybe we should have left Loretta a note, you know, just in case?”

“Oh sure like what? ‘Hey Nana, Derrick and I teleported to a Hell dimension but we should be back soon, pick you up a knickknack on the way home, love you!’?”

“Well not quite as sarcastic but yeah. Her magic is more practiced, Victoria, and if something were to go wrong here with us, we’d have an anchor to help pull us back.” Derrick explained as the two made their way towards the ruined cathedral. “I’m glad you’re feeling better. I was really worried.”

“What? Oh, yeah. Sorry if I scared you. But I actually feel stronger.”

“No, don’t be silly, Victoria. I shouldn’t have fed from you. I could have really…I could have killed you.”

47: To Hell and Back- Pt. 2

Victoria awoke with a dark haze looming over her eyes. Grogginess clouded her mind like thick smoke billowing from a chimney on a cold winter’s morning. She blinked hard and shook her head to try and clear the fog. Standing on unsure footing, she immediately stumbled into a wall, knocking over a tray of fresh baked breads. “What? Where am I?” she wondered, dazed and confused.

46: To Hell and Back - Pt. 1

Derrick stood as Loretta entered the den where he sat with his head lowered into his hands thinking about the woman laid up in the back bedroom. His eyes moved to hers solemnly and took in the grim expression of her stare as she pinned him in place in the middle of the room. Slowly he forced his legs to move forward coming to stop just in front of his old friend as he glanced up the stairs in a gesturing motion. “How is she?” he asked and tucked his hands into his pockets, removing them and anxiously folding them in front of him.

45: The Walls Between Us – Pt. 3

“Tommy Calabrese is currently in police custody. He is being held at the Avondale Police Department until a bail hearing is set. In a move that shocked millions around the country including members of his own family the long time Italian Godfather and rumored gangster has confessed to his part in over a dozen unsolved homicides including the recent assassination and beheading of Former Avondale Police Detective Michael Rizzitello’s brother and sister-in-law. Stay tuned to WXKY Channel 10 News for more on this developing story.” Every station in town and even some national media outlets were all covering the same story. Last week, Tommy ‘The Breeze’ Calabrese had turned himself in. For many it had come as a surprise but for Victoria and Mike, it was a long time coming.

44: The Walls Between Us – Pt. 2

“Derrick?” Victoria called as she rounded the corner to his living room. He was sitting in his favorite chair reading and looked up at her with a smile as she entered.

“Hello, Beautiful!”

“Oh, sorry. I didn’t know you had company. I’ll um; I’ll come back a little later when you’re alone.”

“Victoria?” She stopped and turned to face him as he slid from his seat and started towards her. “What are you talking about? I don’t have any company.” Glancing over his shoulder, the man she saw sitting on the couch beside him was gone and she gasped.

43: The Walls Between Us – Pt. 1

Victoria awoke with a start, her eyes slowly adjusting to the ginger candlelit hue of the room she laid in as her hands rubbed over her face. Her damp tresses swept wildly over her head and she brushed them back sleepily as she sat up. Air from the vent above the bed licked at her exposed flesh, causing her nipples to alert her of the cool conditions of the room and she pulled the blanket tighter over her shoulders.

42: The Burning Question – Pt. 3

“Victoria, what are you doing out here?” Derrick asked in shock as he opened his front door to find the detective dripping wet on his welcome mat. “It’s pouring rain, you could get sick!” He replied and reached a hand towards her with genuine concern. A quiver of awareness edged through her body at the mere touch of his hand on her cheek. And there it was again.

Victoria had tried to fight the urge to face him; to walk up to his door and see him after the fool she’d made of herself the night of Devereux’s party. And yet she allowed her legs to carry her here. And now she stood in front of the one man who, for the past week, had been avoiding her. Pulling away as if she’d been burned by his fingers, she took a step back, blinking several times to gather her wits about her. He watched her with his eyes narrowed and expectant, waiting for her to speak.

41: The Burning Question – Pt. 2

This isn’t right, this can’t be happening right now, Victoria thought as she stood in the waiting room listening to the Doctor tell her they were doing their best to stabilize Mike. She couldn’t understand what he was saying, as if all of a sudden the doctor spoke a different language and none of this was real. There was no way she was standing in front of this man listening to him tell her that her partner may not pull through or that he may not be able to continue in his line of work.

40: The Burning Question – Pt. 1

“How’s Derrick?” Mike asked with a smile hopping back in the car after finishing his second round of checkpoints. “I’ve been meaning to have you thank him for me for the Murray’s gift basket. It’s just as good as I remember. I am curious how he knew what I liked. Then again my pillow talk usually doesn’t involve meats…well, not those kind anyway.”

Victoria responded with a simple shrug but couldn’t help noticing the presumptuous smirk on her partner’s face. “He’s fine I guess,” she answered, choosing to ignore his comment about pillow talk. “I’ll be sure to give him your message.”

“You guess? You mean you didn’t ask this morning when you left his place?”

“Nice try Mike, but Derrick and I are friends. It’s not like we talk every day.”

“Really? Still just friends huh?”

“Uh yeah, just friends.”

“Ah ok. Given the way you two were working the dance floor at the party, one would assume, and rightfully so, that you’ve finally moved passed that point.”

“Well you’d be assuming wrong.”

39: Truth and Consequence – Pt. 3

“Who’s a vampire gotta kill to get a bloody drink around here?” A tall, blonde haired man standing beside Victoria growled in a thick English accent as he turned and rested against the bar. Leaning towards her she could see the ice blue chill of his eyes and the fangs that stuck prominently from either side of his jaw as he smiled seductively at her.

38: Truth and Consequence – Pt. 2

“What the hell are you doing here?” Cole growled as he opened his front door to find Derrick standing in the hallway. “Get lost before I stake you.”

Derrick smiled sinisterly and inched closer towards the threshold causing Cole to take one step back from the door. “Been reading up have we? Preparing for a war Cole? Because trust me when I say I’m decidedly better armed for whatever it is you think you can do to me but I didn’t come here looking for a fight. I came on Victoria’s behalf; she needs you.”

37: Truth and Consequence – Pt. 1

“Hey,” Derrick smiled as Victoria opened the door to let him inside. “I got your message, sorry I didn’t get here sooner but I had to make a pit stop.” His fingers tapped lightly on the top of a box he was holding as he made his way towards her living room.

“It’s ok I was just going over some of the evidence from the last few crime scenes hoping to see some sort of connection. Nothing’s jumped out at me yet though. You look nice tonight. New coat? Did I cut your date short or something?”

“Date, right. No not at all, Victoria. I’m not sure if you’ve noticed this or not but it’s sort of snowing outside.”

“Oh trust me I’ve noticed and I’m hoping it doesn’t stick. It was freezing in here too and I don’t care for a white Christmas. I wasn’t aware that you felt the cold though; given that you’re body temperature is oh, dead. As for me, I was about to just give up on this thing and go upstairs to my blanket.”

“Mmm was that an invitation?”

36: The Unlikely Duo – Pt. 3

“Derrick! What are you doing here?” Victoria asked in a whisper trying her best to close the front door behind her.

“Uh, I thought you could use some help talking to your Mom.”

“What? No I don’t need help at all actually I can handle my Mom. You need to get out of here, now.”

“Ok well, that’s not exactly the greeting I was hoping for,” he grinned and showed her the bottle in his hands. “I even brought a bottle of the finest red wine. We can have it with dinner,” he inhaled deeply and tilted his head to the side. “Mmm is that Roasted Turkey, sweet potatoes, stuffing and cranberry sauce I smell? Besides I could have sworn you invited me to come.”

“What? I specifically said ‘no, Derrick, you aren’t invited’.”

“Ah, I thought you meant on the ride up, so I flew,” he smirked teasingly.

35: The Unlikely Duo – Pt. 2

Victoria waited near the jeep as Derrick headed inside the gate. The sun was starting to set and she had a sudden feeling of being watched. Pushing off of her truck, she paced a little around the trunk looking over the cars parked in the lot around her. With the exception of the traffic moving over the freeway nearby, all was quiet. She shook off the sense of dread and sighed heavily, glancing at the clock on the town hall tower a few blocks away. “Come on, Derrick. How long is this gonna take.”

34: The Unlikely Duo – Pt. 1

“Hey, Vik, someone’s here to see you,” Lou yelled from the bullpen towards the lounge. It was another hectic day at work and the precinct was a flurry of activity. Police officers dressed in their blues milled about shuffling papers back and forth to different departments as several conversations shot off in every corner of the building concerning one case or another.

With twenty-one active homicides and another three aggregated from burglary, the detective’s bureau was stretched pretty thin. Victoria had been working longer nights, some shifts totaling 48 hours without breaks and she was doing all she could to stay on her feet and get her desk cleared but it wasn’t easy. Between the gallons of coffee and tea she consumed she had about a dozen witness testimonies to sift through and a handful of interrogations to conduct.

33: I Fall to Pieces – Pt. 3

“What the hell are you doing here?” Victoria asked taking Jake’s arm and quickly leading him into her garage away from possible prying eyes. “Are you crazy? Why would you come here?”

“Derrick asked me to check on you so I came. Why? What’s wrong?”

“What’s wrong? Jake! You’re dead! How do you think it looks for a dead man to suddenly show up at the doorstep of the detective who investigated his murder? What the hell was Derrick thinking asking that of you? I can’t have you here! You can’t just up and walk into my driveway whenever you want!”

32: I Fall to Pieces – Pt. 2

“What’s this?” Derrick growled as Perry dropped a stack of papers in front of him.

“It’s inventory from last night’s restock and sales report for the last week.”

“I didn’t ask for this, I only wanted the morning paper.”

“Why? So you can see what that detective is up to? Planning on stalking more crime scenes in hopes of catching a glimpse of her?” Perry asked as he started for the door.

31: I Fall to Pieces – Pt. 1

“I’m walking out my door as we speak,” Victoria spoke into the microphone of her earpiece as she juggled her bags and an evidence box in her hands and opened her front door to find Cole standing on her stoop with a smile. “Uh Mike, I’ll see ya when I get to work alright? Cole!”

“Hey!” he grabbed the box from her hands and started towards her car with her.

“Hey! It’s been a while since you’ve dropped by. How are you?”
